Pioneer Park May 6
All residents of Batumi and tourists visiting the city with great pleasure spend their free time in the shadow of the park on May 6th, located around Lake Nurigel.
The lake, which emerged from the swamp gati, has its own legend, which says that a long time ago a boy named Nuri drowned in it. The mother of this boy for many years sat by the pond and called to her son: & laquo; Nuri gel & raquo; (Nuri, come to me).
In 1881, a city garden was laid around a small lake on the outskirts of the port town of Batum. The park was based on two small estates, where at that time goats and wild boars grazed down from the nearest mountains.
Later, this city kindergarten became part of the Seaside Boulevard laid by Mikhail Alfons. The first plantings were made and alleys made. But the territory consisted of sandy soil, which quickly washed out due to rains. Therefore, the maintenance of the park was expensive.
During the Soviet period, the city garden was renamed Pioneer Park and expanded from 6.14 hectares. up to 17 ha. As a result of the work, coniferous and deciduous trees, as well as shrubs and other plants were transplanted from the Botanical Garden.
Now the park is renamed in honor of the patron of Georgia, St. George May 6 is the day of St. George and is a favorite place for walks of citizens and guests of Batumi.
