Useful information about Batumi and Georgia
Sandy beaches of Ureki
Many residents of Batumi, tourists visiting the capital of Adjara, prefer sandy beaches. In the city and other sea resorts of Adjara, the coast is covered with pebbles. The closest and only resort where the coast is covered with sand is the coast of Ureki (Guria region), 45 km north of Batumi.
Urek sandy beach is not quite ordinary, sand on it is of volcanic origin and, in addition to quartz, has magnetic rock (magnetic sand) in its composition. If you bring an ordinary magnet to the sand from the Urek coast, then the sand will gather on this magnet. In the first half of the twentieth century, Urek beaches even carried out work on the extraction of magnet. However, local doctors and scientists convinced the authorities and stopped such vandalism.
The healing properties of the magnet are no longer a secret, the sand in Ureki has a beneficial effect on the state of the body and treats some diseases. The first sanatoriums appeared in Ureki in the 1970s, the effect of treatment was so overwhelming that the small village instantly became a resort of national importance and began to be built up by sanatorium complexes of various organizations.
Now Ureki is experiencing a rebirth: the resort is mainly a family resort, the entrance to the sea is gentle, the sands are still healing. In winter, this is an ordinary village, where about 1000 inhabitants live.
