Useful information about Batumi and Georgia

The capital of Kakheti

Kakheti has its own capital in the most historical region of eastern Georgia. It was here, in Telavi, that the protagonist of the legendary film "Mimino" tried to get through.

Telavi, like the whole of Kakheti, is attractive for its diversity. In the vicinity of the city you can visit the oldest monasteries and holy temples. Enjoy the contemplation of snow-white peaks and a fabulous valley. Since the city is located high enough, the air in Telavi is clean and fresh.

The city is located on the slope of the ridge in the cradle of the Alazani Valley. It is protected by the mighty mountains of the Greater Caucasus, which are crowned with the highest peaks. Their slopes are covered with thickets of oak forest, gradually turning into abundant malachite meadows. The picturesque rivers Alazani and Iori nourish the surroundings of the city.

Telavi is considered one of the oldest cities. It was an important center of trade, because the caravan route between east and west passed through it. Today in the city, ancient structures are adjacent to modern buildings and original Georgian buildings.

Telavi has cold and harsh winters and very sunny and hot summers. Excess of the sun turned this land into a grape empire. Amber vines adorn the Kakheti land, symbolizing its abundance and wealth. The local nature captivates with its amazing beauty. Telavi is simply immersed in greenery, forming a cozy Eden corner. The centuries-old elm trees, which grow in the environs in incredible abundance, have taken root here. It was they who gave the city a name, since in the Georgian language karagachs are called "bodies."

Telavi attracts tourists by the fact that here you can get acquainted with architectural ancient monuments. Ancient monasteries, temples and ancient religious complexes have survived to this day. Also, tourists can get in touch with the ancient traditions associated with winemaking.

Telavi is considered the center of all winemaking in Georgia, which is built in a cult. Kakheti wines are very popular far beyond the Georgian border. More than seventy types of this hop drink are made in these lands.

For culture lovers, Telavi offers to visit a fortress called Batonis-tsikhe, located right in the city center. In ancient times, the building was the residence of the kings. Today on the territory of the fortress is a monument to King Heraclius, as well as a unique art gallery and ethno museum. In the gallery you can see the paintings of famous artists from different countries.

Behind the walls of the fortress offers a stunning view of the huge vineyards and silk groves. From the walls you can see the silver glare of Alazani and the cascading mountains, soaring up above the clouds.
