Churches and monasteries worth seeing while traveling in Georgia

When planning a trip to Georgia, it is important to understand that the most impressive sights of the country, in addition to mountain villages and large cities, are Orthodox monasteries and churches. Most of them played an important role in the religious past of Georgia and have important cultural and architectural value. Here's a quick overview of the churches you should see first:

Anchiskhati Basilica

The oldest in Tbilisi is Anchiskhati Church, built in the 6th century. It was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary, but since the icon of the Savior was moved from the Ancha monastery to Tbilisi to save the city from the Ottoman invasion, in 1675 the church was renamed Anchiskhati.

Atena Zion

This 7th-century church in Ateni village is located about 10 km from the town of Gori. Its walls are richly decorated and contain the earliest known inscriptions on Nusha Hutsari & mdash; one of the variants of the Georgian alphabet. Here are examples of mhedruli & mdash; real Georgian writing.

Holy Assumption Cathedral in Manglisi

This cathedral, dating from the 6-7th century, is located near the city of Manglisi & mdash; once important religious center. According to historical documents, the first church appeared here under King Miriam in the 4th century, but was demolished and replaced with a new one. In 1002, the building was completely renovated and expanded. The cathedral is home to some of the ancient relics of Georgian Christianity.

Svetitskhoveli

During its existence, this cathedral in Mtskheta has experienced many tribulations. Some of its valuable frescoes have not survived to the present day, but part has been restored, including the image of the "Beast of the Apocalypse" 13th century and zodiac figures.

David Gareji

This rock complex carved in the rock in the Kakheti region includes hundreds of cells, chapels, churches and other rooms hollowed out in the rock. Despite the harsh environment in a semi-desert environment, the monastery for many centuries remained an important center of cultural and spiritual activity. The high aesthetic skill of the frescoes found in the monastery made them an integral part of the country's treasury.

Wardzia

Although Vardzia & mdash; it is rather a cave city, one of the most important religious centers of the country, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which dates back to 1180, belongs to it. The temple has a valuable series of wall paintings, including a portrait of Queen Tamara. The church is completely carved out of the rock, as is the rest of the city. On the upper walls are episodes from the life of Christ.

Jvari Monastery

Overlooking the city of Mtskheta, the Jvari Monastery is another important religious building in Georgia. It is believed that here in the 6th century, St. Nino, who brought Christianity to the country, erected a large wooden cross on the site of the pagan temple. Title & ldquo; Jvari & rdquo; translated from Georgian means & ldquo; cross & rdquo ;. The current church was built between 590-605 and shows the names of the main builders on its facade.

Trinity Church in Gergeti

This church is located at the foot of Mount Kazbegi near the village of Gergeti and is one of the most picturesque places in Georgia. The church was built in the 14th century. This place is worth a visit to everyone who is in the city of Stepantsminda.

Timotesubani

Timotesubani & mdash; it is a medieval monastery complex located near Borjomi and consisting of various structures built between the 11th and 18th centuries. The main temple & mdash; domed structure built of stone. The interior is largely frescoed.

Tsminda Sameba

Often called by the Georgian name Sameba, Tbilisi Holy Trinity Cathedral is the main religious building of the Orthodox Church of Georgia. The building is a combination of traditional styles of Georgian church architecture from different periods and even has some Byzantine connotations.
